Afghanistan: (Centre) Zakia (age 16) escaped a forced marriage to a 25-year-old man in Iran. She now lives in a shelter for girls and women in Kabul. The shelter aims to resolve family problems, with the goal of returning girls and women to their communities, but the challenges are great. High rates of child marriage and widespread domestic violence are both linked to entrenched gender inequality in Afghanistan.

Everyone gets hurt by someone. I think the someone that hurt me the worst was someone I loved and I was dating at the time, and I couldn’t see that..so curse myself, haha. I was stupid at the time, you know how us teenagers can be..we want what we want, and we think that if it’s right it’s right. If you ever get in a relationship and more than one person tells you..it’s not right, and you aren’t being yourself..get out before it’s too late. Before you get hurt. I wasted a year of my life foolishly. I can’t get over that, so don’t let it happen to you.
